Internet Merchant Accounts
An Internet Merchant Account can be your gateway to online success and is mandatory if you wish to also get paid for whatever services or products you deliver.
A Merchant Account is basically a bank account (other financial institutions may offer this possibility as well) created with the sole purpose of accepting credit or debit card payments and other electronic payment methods. The payment gateway that you have chosen (the online organization or company which provides the adequate software and means for you to accept online payments) will actually be working in conjunction with the merchant account institution whenever any payment is to be processed.

Internet Merchant Accounts
  • The automated process is very simple: first, the payment processor registers you as a customer and registers your merchant account details. Then, it provides you with the software or API (Application Programmable Interface) or SDK (Software Development Kit) for you to use. You then have to use these instruments and create the web pages or the software that your customers will later access in order to complete an order and issue payment. When such a customer comes around, he will see your page or use your software and will place an order. The payment processor then takes over and collects all the needed information (credit card number and type, name, address, bank, all the necessary information for a payment to be able to happen). The information collected usually depends on the payment processor and the merchant account institution’s guidelines. After the data collection has ended and the user presses the magical “Buy” or “Checkout” button, the payment processor starts corresponding with the merchant account. Depending on the data submitted and the results, it will then show, to your customer, either “Congratulations” or “Sorry”.

  • The more perceptive of you might have noticed, by this point, that there is a problem with these merchant accounts. Indeed, neither the payment processor nor the bank which you have a merchant account with will be unable to tell whether or not the person submitting the data is actually the person holding that data. Nowadays, with the ascent of credit card fraud, it is getting more and more difficult to prevent identity theft, especially since many computer and internet users lack even the most basic knowledge about information security. It seems that, despite the numerous warnings, the numerous training seminars and self-help courses, people still do not wish to bother, but, yet, complain when their information is leaked through their own doing.

  • This is, actually, the reason why most local banks do not wish to offer Internet Merchant Accounts. For them, Internet commerce is a hassle they wish to avoid at all costs, because, on the long run, they will have a lot of problems because of it. Complaints, grievances, money-back requests, not to mention the necessity of highly-trained personnel, all these take a heavy toll on smaller banks or financial institutions.

  • That is not necessarily a problem with Internet-based organizations. Due to the very nature of their business, they are susceptible to the kind of hassle mentioned earlier every day. For such companies, it will not matter whether or not you have any personal security. The most common practice is a very strict terms of use policy, created by trained people (people that the company must have in order to be able to operate in the first place) which basically leaves them with very little possible damage.

Therefore, when seeking to create an Internet Merchant Account, look for these companies. They might cost more, but they will be available at all times. Consider that the security of your customers’ personal information will only depend on you, IF you collect and store that information in the first place. Otherwise, there is really not too much you can do about it. Internet domain registrars, hosting companies, Internet gateway companies and even online auction companies will offer a combined package that includes the payment gateway and the merchant account, so, according to the opinion of most Internet salesmen, this solution might not be the cheapest, but it is by far the most convenient.

  • When you’ve decided on all the details of your soon-to-be online business, consider a few extra costs that might appear: application fees, ongoing fees, termination fees, transaction processing fees and any other miscellaneous fees that the merchant account company might demand.
