Credit Cards Guide
  • For those who would like to borrow at times in a flexible way and with the most advantages, getting a credit card is a very good option. In case the owner uses it properly, a credit card can help considerably in managing one’s personal finances and it has a plenty of other advantages.

  • Before actually talking about the advantages, a short guide should present the principal elements related to credit cards in general. First of all, there are thousands of different cards in the market, so the choice between them is not easy at all. It may happen that somebody chooses a card that simply is not right for him/her. Or one may realize after choosing a card that there is another one with more advantages. This is because cards vary from company to company, from bank to bank; however, the most essential factors are the future cardholder’s personal and financial circumstances and needs. A businessman will evidently need a different card than an individual who has nothing to do with commerce. Identifying which card fits to one’s needs the best should be made based on the factors described below. A specialist’s advice is not to be despised either.

  • The next question when it comes to the credit cards’ maze is the eligibility issue and the practical question of how these cards work. First, one should get informed if he/she will be accepted to get the credit card he/she wants. Eligibility may depend on one’s needs, credit rating as well as on the financial institution issuing the card. After being eligible, the paperwork should be done, and in a few days one will get the card itself.

  • Before obtaining the card, it is useful to understand how it works. Such a card can be used as a payment-method, thus providing one with the convenience of not having to carry the money in a purse. Besides the extra convenience, paying with credit cards also has a security element: one does not need to worry about thieves. Finally, credit cards have the option of flexible borrowing. If one needs a certain amount of money that is equal or below the credit card-limit, one does not need to go to a financial institution, do some tiring paperwork: one can withdraw that amount directly from the card. So it is time-saving, and if paying back the balance in full before the deadline, no interest-rate is charged. Such an interest-rate free period may last up to 59 days from the moment of the transaction. However, this information must be checked as not all the cards have this option!

  • Practically, when making purchases with a credit card, one is using the lender’s money which should be paid back by a predefined period. Cardholders get a statement monthly which contains the details about the transactions one has made that month. Therefore it is very easy to track the transactions, debts and repay these debts in time.

  • Although it is not all the same which card-type is chosen, this is not a too complex thing after all. Besides asking an advisor, one can look at an online review and compare several card types: their benefits, bonus-system and costs. Moreover, comparing different credit cards is easier today due to the obligation of providers to summarize the key features of their cards: the applying interest charges and any additional fees that may occur for different transactions.

  • It is useful, however, to know that the choice of the best card depends on the card’s future usage as well. There are three basic usages: using the card for purchases, transferring an outstanding debt from a card to another card, and withdrawing money from the card using a cash-machine. People should keep in mind that there is a tendency of providers charging different interest rates for the before-mentioned elements.

  • The next thing to be discussed is the benefits and the negative points of using a credit card. The first advantage of credit cards is getting a short-term credit for free in case one repays his/her balances in full until the deadline. Second, one can make purchases safely both from inside one’s home country and from abroad. Similarly, there is the possibility of buying products conveniently, from the internet. Also, there is a purchase protection in case the bought product is faulty or is not received: if its value is between £100 and £3,000, card-providers give card users a refund. Finally, there are some incentives which take the form of loyalty bonuses or cash back for those who use their cards continuously, for diverse purposes, or who make large purchases with it.

  • Besides the advantages, one should be careful of repaying one’s balance in full, otherwise interests are charged. Similarly, the credit-limit may be lower than one expects it to be. A final advice would be to look for those cards that reward cardholders in case they are spending. These reward-schemes either provide one with cash back, loyalty or bonus points, or offer the possibility of charitable donations.
