Avoid Credit Card Debt
  • Credit card debt is something very common nowadays, since many people have credit cards, but only a few of them know how to use them wisely. And the main reason which causes credit card debt is the reckless use of them. The methods to avoid it are mostly based on common sense and responsible usage. It might seem simple, but this is the hardest thing to learn!

  • One of the basic rules is that the owner should avoid charging more than he can afford and he should always pay back his debts on time. To make this possible, people should think about their credit cards as money, not as a loan. The situation is simple: they should only use the money they have on the account, and they should not use the credit only if they are sure that they can pay it back at the end of the month. Most people are not capable to think like this, they consider their credit limit as a loan, and they use their cards accordingly. At the end of the month they realize that they cannot pay their bills on time, and this is the fast way to credit card debt. Making low payments and being late with the bills is the first cause of credit card debt. Always consider a credit card as money, not as a loan.

  • The other golden rule is to charge only the things you can afford. People should buy only the thing they need, but who can do this when there are so many commercials trying to convince people to buy something? This requires responsible usage of the credit card. There are several different situations which may come up in everyone’s life. For the smaller purchases people usually have money on their account, the problem arises when they really need something, but they cannot afford it. Let us take a few such situations. People might have to purchase something because it is an emergency (illness for example). In this case, the person should charge it on the credit card, but he should also make a repayment plan and stick to it for the future. There are unpredictable events in everyone’s life, which is why it is good to have some extra cash on the bank account, or to be a responsible person and stick to the repayment plan. There many situations when people want to buy something they need, but it is not an emergency. This situation needs responsibility! The person should not buy the desired thing, but he should save money and buy it only when he has enough funds. This is one of the hardest things to do, so people should always prioritize!

  • Another common mistake is when people charge small things on their credit cards. Small things like a meal, movie tickets and so on. These things will not exist when the bill comes, but there could be many such small things during a month. People should not use their credit to pay for such things, and if they do, they should pay attention to charge only a few such things, which will not exist when the bill comes. These were very common situations when people use credit cards, instead of paying for the important things and emergencies using their credit.

  • The most important rule in credit card usage is to pay off the balance at the end of the month. This requires responsible use of the credit cards during the month, but it is the only solution to avoid credit card debt. There are some situations when people simply cannot afford to pay the balance off at the end of the month, but this should not be a habit! They should at least try to pay off a big part of the balance, and avoid credit card usage until the whole balance is paid off. Credit card companies have lots of advertisements with special services; they are another way to get into credit card debt. Only people who really need these special services should sign up for them. These extra services might include life insurance or card fraud protection plans. They are not totally unnecessary, but they are usually overpriced, so the person who wants a life insurance should contact an insurance company and should not sign up for this extra service.

  • The main rules to avoid credit card debts are simple, but many people simply cannot apply these rules in their everyday life, that is why so many of them end up fighting with credit card debt. People should be responsible, and use their credit only when really necessary, that is the one and only golden rule.
